Robotics

There is a clear need for high-dexterity robots that can perform tasks that are difficult or hazardous for humans. For example, NASA needs robots that are capable of operating tools and performing extra-vehicular repairs on spacecraft that were originally designed for human operation. Robotic manipulators will also be crucial to in-space assembly and construction. High-dexterity robotic manipulators could also prove crucial to long-term manned missions to Mars, hazardous and autonomous industrial assembly facilities, high-temperature power facilities, and others areas of use.

High-dexterity robots require many small sensors to provide data to the robotic controller.  IFOS delivers sensors with the size, speed, resolution, and sensitivity required by this market. IFOS enjoys strong support from industry partners who recognize that IFOS’s interrogation unit provides unique advantages for robotics applications.

IFOS has developed a number of different types of sensors, including the following:

  • Light sensors, which measure light intensity.
  • Heat Sensors, which measure temperature intensity.
  • Strain sensors, which measure weight and resistance.
  • Touch sensors, which indicate contact with another surface or object.
  • Ultra Sonic Rangers, which detect distance to a target object.
  • Gyroscopes, which indicate direction.
