Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors are considered the most promising state-of-the-art technology platform for distributed sensing. FBGs also have extensive applications in the telecommunications and defense industries for dense wavelength division demultiplexing (DWDM), laser stabilization, and erbium amplifier gain flattening in the 1550 nm wavelength range. IFOS has developed a series of fiber optic sensors (such as an accelerometer) that are designed on the principle that an FBG reflects a specific wavelength, and the wavelength shifts depending on the strain applied. FBG sensors are sensitive to extremely small strains. Fiber optic sensors based on FBG technology are suitable for direct strain and temperature sensing (as well as indirect measurement) and have a number of advantages compared to conventional strain gauges. FBG-based sensors have been used to monitor the structural health of a 12-story building, a composite marine pile under static and dynamic loading, long-period deformation of railway bridges, and other civil structures.
